Amazon has many ways to rank products, but one of the least understood is the Amazon Bestsellers rank. Let’s try to understand what this means for you as a buyer and seller.
Amazon has different ways of ranking products, but one of the least understood seems to be the Amazon Bestsellers Rank (also known simply as “sales rank”). We hope this post helps you, as a customer, understand which books are selling well in a certain area and, as a seller, which products may be your main competition.
As a seller (or in the case of books, as an author) is your marketing working? Armed with Amazon’s “secret recipe”, you also become a better shopper.
Please keep in mind that Amazon does not explicitly state how the Best Sellers Rank is calculated. The information below is based on research, deduction, and elimination processes.
What is the Amazon Bestsellers rank?
In all book categories (including Paid and Free Kindle books ), as well as most product categories on Amazon, if you scroll down to the “Product Details” section, you will see “Amazon Bestsellers Rank” . This is a number that is supposed to be calculated hourly (as reported by Amazon) and linked to the number of recent sales of the product (also taking into account historical sales data), compared to other products in this category.
The ranking of a product can, of course, be different from different Amazon stores, as each store represents a different “market” in itself. For example, the monk who sold his Ferrari is # 17 in the Indian store, while # 9168 in Amazon.com.
A rank of # 1, therefore, means that the product has recently sold more than any other product in this category, on this store.
A common misconception about the bestseller ranking is that it takes into account more than just sales, but it seems that this idea is completely wrong. This ranking takes into account the sales (recent & historical, more on that later) so I’m afraid of having tons of Amazon Vine members How to Become an Amazon Vine Reviewer & Get Free Stuff How to Become an Amazon Vine Reviewer & Get Free Stuff A Amazon program that’s been around since 2007 might make you think twice about the power of good reviews.
It is also an opportunity to be spotted for the program. Learn more here. Reading on to yourself leaving tons of reviews and opinions will not necessarily help your best seller ranking. This means that a ranking is not representative of cumulative sales (or overall sales volume), but rather of how a product has sold very recently compared to others in its category.
That said, while reviews and ratings do not directly affect the ranking of top sellers, they are likely to influence people to buy your product and, indirectly, help your bestsellers rank.
